Irish Post Goof-up

So, this is what happened.
A friend of mine and I was drinking beer at a local pub and I happened to see Irish Post and Irish Times newspapers. It was March 23, 2011 according to me, my friend Louise and Irish Times.

Irish Post disagreed.
The date on that day's(March 23) daily was March 26, 2011.
Irish Post - Date Goofup
So, either they invented time travel or someone else did.
Or, it was a goof-up.

You be the judge!

PG Open day at Middlesex University

Find out how a postgraduate open evening can help you decide whether postgraduate study at Middlesex is right for you. At the event prospective students have the opportunity to receive personalised advice from academics and student support staff, meet current postgraduate students and experience our modern flagship Hendon campus

I was interviewed as well and was asked questions related to the Volunteering activity I do at Middlesex University, with the Charities I support and how I used to contribute to the society in Sweden prior to moving to London.

UK Post-study work (PSW) visa - Final verdict

So, yes -- the final verdict is out. Students cannot apply for post-study work visa after April 2012. Normally, current master students should be fine as they would apply before that date.

Over the last few posts we have been following the developments from the “no change” to today’s shock announcement. The opportunity to gain real work experience in the UK after graduation has been a major incentive for many students I have spoken to about their decision to study in the UK. The scrapping of PSW has changed everything.

The announcement indicates that another aspect of the international student experience, the ability to work part-time, will remain although there will be restrictions on non-course related placements. This at least means that students can continue to develop their employability whilst in the UK and aim to compete with EU students for graduate jobs (sponsored) afterward.

According to the Summary document, the Post Study Work visa route will close to applicants from April 2012. There will be no restriction on those who apply under Tier 2 and the Government has announced its intention to support entrepreneurs.

Perigee Moon - Biggest moon in 20 years

The date is March 19, 2011.

If the moon looks a little bit bigger and brighter on that weekend, there is an awesome reason for that. March 19, 2011 Saturday's full moon will be a super "Perigee moon," the biggest the moon will ever look in almost 20 years. This rare celestial event happens when the moon reaches the closest possible point of its orbit around the earth about 212,000 miles away. NASA says the moon will appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

Catch it while you can. If you miss it, you'll have to wait until 2029 to see it again.

UK PSW Update - relief to students?

 Andrew Humphrey, the immigration adviser who spoke recently at International Futures, has confirmed that the proposed scrapping of the Post-Study Work visas will not be taking place.

The announcement came on March 16, 2011 from the UK Borders Agency. In their Statement of Changes, page 57 , it confirms at para 7.9

"No changes, other than those set out in 7.16 and 7.17 below, are being made to the Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) category, which caters for international graduates who have studied in the UK and wish to work following their graduation."

This will be a major relief to many students who were concerned they would not be able to apply to work in the UK after graduating. It also means that international students remain attractive to employers. Please continue to monitor the UKCISA website for any future changes to the immigration rules that may affect student visa holders and applications for Tier 1 Post Study Work.  See www.ukcisa.org.uk.

Google multiple sign-in

So, Google has introduced a feature using which you can sign in with two different google accounts on the same browser. Imagine not having to install another browser just because you need to login to work email which is managed by google apps' email solution! Well, to be honest, I would recommend having more than one browser in your system; but if you cannot be bothered, you do not need to logout of your account; pop in to another account, take a quick look and then come back to your main account again.

This is how you do it.

How to determine the technology used to build a website?

Ever seen an awesome website but you have been left to wonder and more often than not guess the technology using which the website is built? Sometimes, the technology being used becomes apparent by looking at the URLs. However, the programming language and technology can be hidden by URL re-writing. The HTTP response headers, cookies, style-sheets and source comments may also give clues as in to which technology is being used.

Some nice tools for finding out the technology behind: (not an exhaustive list)
    * BuiltWith
    * DomainTools
    * NetCraft

Firefox addons:
    * Domain Details - IP, country and webserver details
    * Library Detector - Javascript libraries in use

If you wish to reverse engineer a website and perhaps even replicate some of the good features that they have used, go ahead, find out how it is built first. One question though -- would you use jQuery? =)

Oxymoron - A review

An oxymoron is usually defined as  "A phrase in which two words are contradictory meaning"  are brought together, for example;

1)  Clearly misunderstood
2) Exact Estimate
3) Small Crowd
4) Act Naturally
5) Found Missing
6) Fully Empty
7) Pretty ugly
8) Seriously funny
9) Only choice
10) Original copies
11)Virtual reality
12)Dark light

And, the best one ---

13) Happily Married
=)

Is your computer a male or a female?

To crack the myth -- do this!

1. Open Notepad
2. Type the following line in notepad:
CreateObject("SAPI.SpVoice").Speak"I love You"
3. Save file as computer_gender.vbs
4. Run the file - If you hear a male voice, it's a boy. If you hear a female voice, it's a girl! ;)

So, is it a boy or a girl? =)
